Q & A

Our Frequently Asked Questions

To address commonly asked questions by our hostel guests, we have provided a list of questions and answers about South Side Traveler’s Rest to better serve our visitors.

How different is SSTR from a hotel, motel or bed and breakfast?

Our hostel provides many of the same amenities as a hotel, motel, or bed and breakfast for a more affordable price.

We also put a greater focus on community and shared living space. We are a place built for meeting and interacting with peers, professionals and Pittsburghers. Our common living area, kitchen and shared rooms are a great place to meet people that are going to events or seminars like yours!

Our highly knowledgeable staff can help you find the perfect local restaurant or tourist spot.

How different is a hostel from an Airbnb?

Our hostel has staff on site at all times in case of an emergency. Also, we have front desk services from 7am to 12pm and 4pm to 9pm.

Our hostel meets building, health, and safety codes and was designed with your safety in mind.

While staying at SSTR, you can immerse yourself in the local and professional community of our guests. It is an experience that cannot be replicated at an Airbnb.

But I found you on Airbnb…

We use Airbnb to give you another option to book with us, but we offer a different experience.

Can I check in after 9pm?

If you need to check in after 9pm, you must let us know 72 hours in advance. Please email info@sstrpgh.com with your name and expected check-in time. We will send you more information on our late check-in process.

I’m arriving on the midnight train to Pittsburgh, how do I get to SSTR?

SSTR is a little over two miles away from the train station. The route is well lit, and the roads are pretty empty at that time of night.
Here are directions from the train station to SSTR.
If you would prefer to take a car, we recommend Bill’s Car Service. He can be reached at (412) 855‑4484.

How long can I stay?

Guests can stay with us for up to 14 nights every 365 days.

Are the dorms co-ed?

Any shared room at our hostel is co-ed.

How private is a shared room?

Each room is spacious and contains lockers for your possessions. Every room has a different key that only the guests staying in your room will have.

What if I want more privacy?

For those looking for more personal space, our private rooms are the best fit for you. In those rooms, you will have the privacy of a hotel with the community and local staff that our hostel offers.

Do you have shared bathrooms?

While our bathrooms are shared, they are single occupancy and lockable.

Do you have WiFi?

We have complimentary WiFi for all guests.

Where do I park?

There is free street parking on South 6th Street and Bingham Street. We do not own a parking lot and are not responsible for anything that happens to your car.
Those who are looking for more secure parking can park at the East Parking Lot at Station Square. It is six blocks away from the hostel.

How close are you to start of the Great Allegheny Passage?

The starting point of the GAP trail is 2 miles away from our hostel.
For those looking for a place to park their car while they bike the GAP, we would recommend the West Stadium Lot at Station Square. It is a secured parking lot and about a mile away from the hostel.

Where can I keep my bike or hiking gear?

During your stay, you can secure your bike and gear in our garage.

Is SSTR ADA accessible?

The outside of our building has a ramp and an automatic door.
The Byers’ suite is located on the first floor and includes an ADA accessible bathroom. It is our only ADA accessible room in the building and is a great option for those with mobility issues.
All of the other rooms are on the second floor, and we do not have an elevator.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel up to 24 hours before your check-in date and receive a full refund. If you cancel within 24 hours, you will be charged the full amount.

How close are you to downtown Pittsburgh?

We are located about a mile and a half from downtown Pittsburgh. It is about a 5-minute drive, 10-minute bus ride, or 15-minute walk from our location.

How close is the nearest restaurant?

We have a few restaurants a block or two away from us, but the hundreds of restaurants, bars, and entertainment options that the South Side offers are about a 5-minute walk from the hostel.

Can I pay for the room with cash?

You can use cash to pay for the room, but we need to have a credit card to hold your reservation.

Will you charge my credit card?

Regardless of how you are paying, we authorize the full price of your stay on your card in all situations. However, we do not collect payment until you check out. At checkout you can pay with cash and your card won’t be charged.

Do you offer group rates?

Depending on the size, we offer 5–10% discounts for groups. For organizing group events, call (412) 623‑9343.

Do you allow pets in the rooms?

We allow properly documented and ADA trained service animals in private rooms.

Can I bring my own linens?

We do not allow guests to bring their own linens. This helps us keep our building up to the city’s health standards.

How do I get into the building?

Upon arrival, simply knock on the S 6th Street door between 4pm and 9pm. A staff member will let you in.
At check-in, you will be given a key with a grey fob that will allow you to enter the building at any time during your stay.

How safe is SSTR?

The hostel is locked at all times, and guests and staff will be the only people with keys to enter the building. In case of an emergency, we have staff on the property at all times.
Our building has a fire alarm and sprinkler system and multiple exits.

How safe is my stuff?

Every bed in a shared room has a corresponding locker, but we do not provide locks for guests. Only the people staying in your room will have the key to your door. We do not take any responsibility for stolen goods.

Can I cook my own food at the hostel?

You are more than welcome to use the hostel’s kitchen. We have space for you to store your dry goods and a community refrigerator.

Wait, I still have questions!

We would love to answer any other questions over the phone at (412) 623‑9343 or through email at info@sstrpgh.com.
